YouTube: Brings the Whole World to Your SmartphonePublicated: 21 Oct 2019
YouTube is a marvelous feature-packed app for Android devices that allows you to watch the world’s most popular videos, follow the channels you are interested in, upload your content, and do tons of other stuff. From fun cat videos to soft tutorials and film trailers, there is nothing you cannot find on YouTube.
Design and Usability 9/10
The design of the app’s interface is traditionally minimalistic and mostly makes use of the white and dimmed-gray colors as its background theme, which contrasts sharply with the red menu and navigation bars.
The navigation is a dream: with a single tap on an icon or a swiping move, you can open new tabs and switch between them. The interface is clear and well-organized, so browsing the app feels natural even if you have never seen or heard of YouTube before.
Key Functions 7/10
Finding a video to watch is simple. On the navigation bar, I really like the ‘What to watch’ tab that contains videos recommended to you or provided by the channels you are following. Then there are tabs like Subscriptions, Recommendations, Trending, and Live to navigate. You can also look into Favorites or go to your Playlists straight from the menu bar.
You can upload and edit your videos from within the app, add filters or music, leave comments, likes or dislikes, and share videos with friends. I also find very useful that you can use the app to connect your smartphone to TV and broadcast favorite content on the big screen.
- The navigation is clear and straightforward
- New Screen Broadcasting feature introduced
- In-product notifications informing you on the release of new features.
- The big grid view does not allow to see many videos on one screen
- To take advantage of Screen Broadcasting your phone has to meet quite a few technical requirements
- Too many intrusive ads.
Furthermore, Live-streamers who create game-related videos or tech reviews will appreciate the new Screen Broadcasting feature, allowing them to broadcast their smartphone screens live with a single tap on the button.
The app offers a secure environment for watching your favorite channels and searching for new videos. If you are worried about your kid watching age-inappropriate content on YouTube, set the Safe Search filters within the app to Strict.
The app is compatible with Android smartphones and tablets that operate OS version 4.0 or later. It also supports Google Chromecast enabling you to watch in-app YouTube videos on your TV.
A Good and Stable Alternative to Third-Party YouTube Apps
There is nothing in the app to surprise or elate you. It is just a successful offspring of the YouTube website version, which is much more responsive and works way better than its mobile website counterpart. If you want to entertain yourself on a trip, the app will give you hours of fun.
